Education Coaches

Education coaches support Afghans of all ages in reaching their education goals. Coaches can help parents navigate the public school system, connect students and parents with tutors, and assist with navigating secondary education. ACS also provides summer activities for youth. The team consists of fellow Afghans with personal experience in the US education system who are ready to answer questions and connect people to existing resources. All Afghans seeking assistance or direction in furthering their education or navigating the public school system are welcome to contact us.

Coaching for Youth

Members of the coaching team visit highschools in the Twin Cities metro area weekly to offer one on one support to Afghan students. Coaches set specific goals each quarter with students and regularly check in with them on their academic progress to ensure they are on track for graduation. Coaches advocate for students to ensure they are enrolled in the appropriate grade for their education level. Coaches can also assist students preparing to graduate highschool to apply for financial aid and scholarships.

Coaches currently visit South High, Leap High, Harding High School, Washington Technology Magnet School, Mississippi Creative Arts School, and Columbia Heights Academy weekly, if you would like us to visit your or your child’s school, contact us.

Coaching for Adults

Afghans seeking ESL classes or other forms of adult education can reach out to the ACS coaching team to be connected with adult education centers in their area or to make arrangements for at home tutoring. Afghan Cultural Society partners with Literacy Minnesota as well as the University of Minnesota to provide classes and one on one instruction. They
can also assist adults with degrees in transferring credits from Afghanistan using the World Education Services transcript evaluation service.

Drop In Tutoring

Afghan Cultural Society offers tutoring services from 3-6 PM every Tuesday at our office in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood.

Summer Programs for Youth

Organized by the Education Coaching team in collaboration with the Family Coaching Consortium, our summer programming offers extracurricular and educational experiences
for youth involved in our coaching program during the school year.

June, 2023, ACS offered a series of activities and field trips related to art, ecology, science, history, and literature to keep students engaged in educational pursuits and build vocational and life skills while learning about the city and state they live in. Students seeking secondary education also had the opportunity to tour local colleges. Read about our 2023 summer program.
