We Want to Hire an Independent Journalist Based in Afghanistan – But We Need Your Help.

If you haven’t signed up for New Home, our weekly newsletter for Afghans and their supporters, you can do so here.

At Afghan Cultural Society, part of our mission lies in educating the public about Afghanistan and its people. Our goal is to be a source of accurate information standing out amongst media coverage that is often characterized by both Western bias and suppression of the voices of everyday Afghans, particularly those of women and other minorities.

In pursuit of this goal, we’ve made contact with Rahim Rostayee* an independent journalist, poet, and writer based in Afghanistan who has agreed to contribute his on the ground reporting to our monthly newsletter, New Home. We are confident Rahim* will provide invaluable perspective and insights for both the diaspora and the community at large. There is just one problem: We can’t pay him with grant funds.

ACS currently runs on federal, state, and county grants which are allocated to specific services and programs related to refugee resettlement and mental health. In addition to fulfilling our mission to educate the public, we believe that creating strong links between Afghan’s living abroad and those at home is crucial to our collective well-being.

We want to commission Rahim* to write a series of articles about current events, history, and culture in Afghanistan from a local perspective. To do this, we need to raise 3k to compensate him for his work.
